Dental, Vision, and Hearing (DVH Plans)

Medicare Coverage

While Medicare most of us would agree that Medicare is a great benefit for so many of us, there are some important services that are not covered by the program. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing exams; or copays related to dental, vision or hearing treatment or services. There are some exceptions, where Medicare Part B may cover costs, such as a dental exam ordered by your Medicare doctor prior to major surgery like heart surgery or an organ transplant.
Likewise, while routine vision care isn’t covered, Medicare does cover treatment of medical conditions affecting the eye, such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.

Medigap and Medicare Advantage

Not covering routine care leaves seniors to pay out of pocket, as most do; or worse, going without needed services. There are programs, including Medicaid and some programs offered by local health departments, but most of us need to rely on personal resources or private insurance.

There is some hope that this will be addressed and changed at some point, but for now, you must purchase separate coverage, unless it is bundled into your Medicare Advantage plan. Some MA plans offer some limited dental coverage, and some may offer some coverage toward dentures, but Medigap plans don’t. Since they only supplement Original Medicare benefits, and Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental care, neither do Medigap plans.
